Tour companies arrange many trips form the capital to many of the surrounding points of interest. Choose your tour operator carefully; the Tourist Information Office may be able to help you select one to suit your interests.
Semmongok is Sarawak Orangutan Sanctuary, 22 kilometers from Kuching. Rehabilitation is organized there, not just for the orangutans but also for hornbills, monkeys and honey-bears. Serian, a town just southeast of the capital, is popular with the locals for its waterfalls.
Other trips take you up the Skrang River, where your tour may include a visit to a longhouse. The experience may not be very genuine, as the inhabitants are used to seeing the tour buses rill in. some tour companies even offer wedding tours for those who wish to tie the knot in a Sarawak longhouse. Needless to say, if you want to see “real” longhouse, you’ll have to venture further up the river and independent of tour companies. Segu Benuk, just 35 kilometers from Kuching and accessible by road, is one of the most frequently visited.

Sarawak’s newest nature experience is Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort, situated about 275 kilometers north of Kuching, near the headwaters of the Lupar River. Opened in 1994, the resort features “longhouse living with all the modern conveniences” including air conditioning, hot water and a modern restaurant. The primary reason for coming here is the jungle: Batang Ai is surrounded by virgin rainforest and within a short boat ride of Batang Ai National Park.
Among the wildlife found in this region are several hundred species of bird – including the majestic hornbill – and also noisy gibbons, tiny barking deer, leaf monkeys and wild boar. The Hilton-run resort offers nature walks, jungle treks and boat trips, as well as excursions to nearby Iban communities and the open-air market at Bandar Sri Aman.
